Spirit of 76 Root Beer
By: Department 56 ®
Some of our nation’s first settlers enjoyed brewing their own "hard" and "soft" beers. Farmers created countless recipes using various combinations of Sarsaparilla, vanilla, cherry bark, licorice, clove, and many other ingredients. In 1876, as America celebrated its 100th birthday at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, root beer was first introduced for commercial distribution in jugs, and bottles soon after. During Prohibition, root beer was one of the most popular beverages in the country. The Spirit of `76 is a nod to this much-beloved drink. Both barrels and bottles are chilling out front, waiting for customers in search of tasty refreshment.
