Punch and Judy Theater
By: Department 56 ®
Punch & Judy puppetry had its roots in 16th century Italy, but was soon popular as a street amusement all over Europe and became a mainstay of Victorian street theatre. In any given show, between eight and seventeen puppet characters participated in telling silly stories which were always followed by peals of laughter from the audience. The adventures of the iconic pair remain popular in England today. In the theatre, Punch and Judy headline a cast of characters that includes a crocodile.
