About Department 56:
The world of Department 56 illuminated houses and village scenes had its start when a group of friends set out for dinner at a country inn on a snowy Christmas eve. With their first vision of the quaint river town glowing with holiday decorations, memories of Christmases past began to flow, and the idea for a lighted Christmas village in miniature was born. In 1976, the first six hand-painted, ceramic buildings in The Original Snow Village® were premiered.
In 1979, this Dept. 56 collection was retired and new pieces were introduced, along with the first Village accessories. In the 1980s, The Heritage Village Collection® was released, starting with the production of The Dickens' Village Series®, which captured the spirit of the classic Victorian Christmas tale. That same decade saw the introduction of The New England Village® and Alpine Village® series, Christmas In the City®, Little Town of Bethlehem™, and The North Pole Series™.
In 1984, Snowbabies™ bisque figures were introduced by D56, filled with snow-suited babies and woodland and polar creatures, along with traditional Christmas figures such as Santa Clause, Rudolph, and Frosty. Over the years, the Snowbabies have been joined by their favorite characters from the world of Walt Disney, too, including Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, Ariel, Bambi, and Winnie the Pooh.
In 1998, The Original Snow Village Halloween collection was introduced, in celebration of the second most popular holiday in the U.S. In 2005, Ralphie and his legendary Red Rider BB Gun joined Department 56 in their newest "A Christmas Story" Christmas classics collection of buildings and accessories.
